🌋 2002 Eruption Craters Hike: Etna North Trekking (2100m)

The 2002 Craters excursion, departing from Piano Provenzana, is our most popular tour for those seeking a simple, safe, and accessible trekking experience. Led by expert guides, you will discover the incredible power of the lateral craters without the strain of high-altitude climbing.

This experience is perfect for families with children (ages 6 and up), couples, and groups of friends who want to experience the authentic side of Mount Etna in total relaxation and safety.

  • 📍 Meeting Point: Piano Provenzana - Etna North
  • Departure Time: 10:30 AM
  • 🥾 Difficulty: Easy / Suitable for everyone
  • Duration: Approx. 3 hours

🕒 The Itinerary: A Journey Through History and Volcanic Nature

The trek starts at 1,820 meters at Piano Provenzana. No vehicles are required: we will begin walking directly among the living traces of the volcano, immediately immersing ourselves in a lunar landscape.

The Power of the 2002 Eruption

We will retrace the dramatic moments of the night between October 26 and 27, 2002, when a violent seismic crisis gave birth to a "bottoniera" (a row of eruptive cones). This eruption destroyed the historic tourist facilities of the North side in just a few hours. We will walk along the eruptive rift, observing how the lava has permanently reshaped this area.

A Journey Through Time and Biodiversity

The route along the "Monte Nero – Timpa Rossa" trail allows you to discover the evolution of the volcano over the decades:

  • The 1911 and 1923 Rifts: Ancient volcanic "wounds" that once threatened the village of Linguaglossa.
  • The Birch Forest: We will walk through an enchanting forest leading to the charming Timpa Rossa Refuge.

The Peak of the Excursion

We will hike up the pyroclastic cones to reach an altitude of 2,100 meters. From here, we will walk right along the rim of the 2002 craters, enjoying a breathtaking panorama stretching from the volcano's smoking summits to the deep blue of the Ionian Sea.

🌋 What you will visit in detail:

  • Piano Provenzana: The remains of the tourist station hit by the eruption.
  • The "Bottoniere": The spectacular eruptive rifts of 1923 and 2002.
  • The 2002 Craters: The stars of the tour, featuring unique colors and shapes.
  • Volcanic Morphologies: Lava flows and volcanic tunnels.

⬇ The Descent: Fun on Volcanic Sand

The return journey is the most exciting part! From the 2002 craters, we will descend along a picturesque slope of volcanic sand (soft ash), allowing for a fast, safe, and fun slide back down to the starting point at 1,800m.
