ETNA CONNECT FCE CATANIA – PIANO PROVENZANA

The “Etna North 3000 – Volcanological Observatory – Piano delle Concazze” tour departs from Piano Provenzana (Linguaglossa – Etna North) and may take place either as a scenic trekking experience or using special 4×4 buses reaching the Pizzi Deneri Volcanological Observatory at approximately 2900 meters above sea level.

This is one of the most fascinating and panoramic excursions on Mount Etna. The route crosses the dramatic eruptive theater of the historic 2002 Etna eruption, one of the most powerful events on the northern slope, which reshaped the entire Piano Provenzana tourist area.

Following the North-East Rift, you will encounter a sequence of ancient and recent eruptive cones. At around 2800 meters, the landscape becomes extraordinary: Piano delle Concazze, a true lunar scenery on Earth.

After approximately 15 minutes, the first stop allows you to explore the “Umberto and Margherita” craters at about 2,380 meters above sea level, with a short guided walk along the crater rims.

The tour then continues towards the Pizzi Deneri Volcanological Observatory (2,818 m). From Piano delle Concazze, you will observe the eruptive area of the 2014 eruption and, during descent, enjoy a spectacular viewpoint overlooking the Valle del Leone.

From the Volcanological Observatory at Pizzi Deneri, the view is simply breathtaking. On clear days, enjoy a full 360° panorama including the Aeolian Islands, the coast of Taormina, Catania, Calabria, and even Stromboli.

The tour includes the descent by 4x4 bus, with a stop at the 2002 eruptive fracture located at approximately 2000 meters above sea level.

A final short trekking of about 20 minutes follows a circular path along the crater rims, where you can admire the characteristic “buttonhole” morphology typical of Mount Etna’s lateral eruptions.
