Excursions Etna south – Rifugio Sapienza

On the southern slope of Mount Etna – (Rifugio Sapienza), you can visit the « Barbagallo » Craters, located at an altitude of 2900 meters above sea level. Formed following the 2002/03 eruption. The southern slope is characterized, compared to the northern slope, by the presence of various eruptions that have « profoundly changed over the years the geomorphological landscape of this side. On this side the eruptions of 1983, 2001 and 2002 can be easily distinguished. These last eruptions have repeatedly destroyed the Piazzale del Rifugio Sapienza, and consequently many ski and accommodation facilities. On this side another suggestive excursion is the descent into « Valle del Bove ». The Valle del Bove used up to 80/90 as pastures, after the 1991 eruption it was totally covered with lava, destroying vast expanses of vegetation.

Other excursions:

Among the other equally fascinating excursions, which we can offer you, is the visit of the « Bottoniera del 2002 » – Eruptive vents formed following the 2002 eruption. Eruption that has profoundly changed the « green » Northern Slope of Piano Provenzana. It is the most recent eruption that took place at these altitudes, and indeed it was devastating.
