Trekking Craters of 2002 - Provenzana Plan - Etna North

The excursion includes a visit to the Bottoniera in 2002, the fractures formed during the eruptions of 1911 and 1923.

The night between 26 and 27 October begins a strong seismic crisis on the north and south sides. On the north side of Piano Provenzana in a few hours starting from the altitude of 2650, a particular activity begins to form eruptive, called a bottoniera. From the eruptive fracture the lava came out which in a few hours destroyed two buildings used for restaurants and hotels.

The eruption of 2002 was one of the most massive and devastating in recent years.

The start of the trek is along the dirt road that from Piano Provenzana leads to the summit craters of the volcano, after the first kilometer you cross the eruptive fracture of the eruption of 27 October 2002 on the path from "Monte Nero - Timpa Rossa", the route allows you to discover and study the many volcanic morphologies related to the eruptions that have taken place on the north side of Etna. A few tens of meters you can also visit the lateral eruptions of 10 September 1911 and 17 June 1923 that threatened the town of Linguaglossa.

Timpa Rossa Refuge

You can also reach the marvelous and suggestive Timpa Rossa Refuge, immersed in a fantastic birch forest. Picnic break and for the more trained you can reach the Grotta dei Lamponi.

After visiting the particular volcanic morpho-structures called Hornitos from the Spanish "Small oven", we will go up along the pyroclastic cones of the 2002 eruption until reaching the maximum altitude of 2100 meters on the edge of the craters, and then descend into a sandy channel to the starting point in Piano Provenzana
