The excursion to the Barbagallo Craters (eruption craters of 2002) is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating and disturbing eruptions on the Southern Slope of Etna. Both from a landscape and educational point of view, it will leave an indelible memory of this excursion on the Etna Volcano.
The excursion will start at an altitude of 2500 m. after having taken advantage of the cableway that leaves from Rifugio Sapienza at an altitude of 1900m and will lead us up to an altitude of 2500m.
Trekking on foot, starting at an altitude of 2500 m, in a north-east direction we will reach the Escrivà Crater in a few minutes (formed in the 2001 eruption).
Continuing north we will reach the base of the craters of the Barbagallo craters. Once at the base we will first visit the effusive mouths and the respective "Hot Point" and then go inside the respective lava flow channel.
The excursion continues towards the last casting (still hot) of 27 July 2019. After the visit of the casting that still today the inside is warm, a small break is made (break).
After the break we continue to climb towards the Barbagallo craters. After visiting the craters at an altitude of 2900 m, the highest point of the hike goes down towards the Belvedere del Valle del Bove, a place that allows you to admire the majestic beauty of the great depression.
Afterwards the excursion continues towards the crater called Cisternazza, and then returns to the station of arrival of the Etna cableway at an altitude of 2500 m.
The descent will continue in the direction of the Barbagallo Craters - (eruption of 2002), with sufficient time available and excellent weather conditions, you can head east, along the long edge of the Valle del Bove - Belvedere. Approximately at 15.30 we will reach the cable car arrival station, where in a few minutes it will lead us to the Piazzale del Rifugio Sapienza.
