Ex Torre of the Filosofo – Barbagallo Craters – Bove Valley
The excursion to the Barbagallo Craters (eruption craters of 2002) is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating and disturbing eruptions on the Southern Slope of Etna. Both from a landscape and educational point of view, it will leave an indelible memory of this excursion on the Etna Volcano.
The excursion will start at an altitude of 2500 m. after taking advantage of the cable car that leaves from Rifugio Sapienza at an altitude of 1900m and will lead us up to an altitude of 2500 m.
Trekking on foot, starting from an altitude of 2500 m, in the north-east direction we will reach in a few minutes the Crater Escriva (formed in the 2001 eruption).
Continuing towards the North we will reach the base of the craters of the Barbagallo craters. Once at the base, we will first visit the effusive mouths and the respective “Hot Point” and then go inside the respective lava flow channel.
The excursion continues towards the last casting (still hot) of 27 July 2019. After the visit of the flow that still today the inside is warm a small break is made (break).
After the break we continue to climb towards the Barbagallo craters. After visiting the craters at an altitude of 2900 m, the highest point of the hike goes down towards the Belvedere del Valle del Bove, a place that allows you to admire the majestic beauty of the great depression.
Subsequently the excursion continues in the direction of the crater called Cisternazza, and then returns to the station of arrival of the Etna cableway at an altitude of 2500 m.
