Eruption of 2002

Excursion to "Bottoniera del 2002"

The eruption of Etna in 2002 lasted from 27 October to 29 January of the following year. It is well-known for the related Holy Veneration Earthquake that caused many damage to the eastern slope of the volcano, particularly the country that gave it the name, Holy Venerina.
This eruption has been called the perfect eruption, and is to be considered the most explosive of the last 100 years. The night between 26 and 27 October begins a strong seismic crisis on the south and north slopes, on the latter side two buildings used for restaurant and hotel activities are destroyed by the earthquakes.
The eruption took off after a few hours from the beginning of the earthquake crisis. Development Fractures occur both on the south and north. The strong magma activity causes ash columns of high ash. In both sides, the "bottoniera" mouths are formed.
In the middle of the morning of October 27, the rivers flood the Provenzana Plan floor, including souvenir shops and the two hotels. On this side, the eruption ends on 7 November, but the castles do not threaten the underlying countries (Linguaglossa). On October 29, due to the strong deformations of the eastern flank and the thrust of magma, there is a sequence of strong earthquakes that cause massive damage to the easternmost countries: Santa Venerina, Acireale, Giarre, Zafferana Etnea, Milo. The ash emission continues uninterruptedly from the southern mouths, arriving also in Africa (Libya) and in the Greek islands.
Closes the Catania Airport, but also that of Reggio Calabria because of the pyroclastic production [1]. In the photo above, carried out by the ISS to the southeast, the ash plume is visible, first captured by a low level of south-east winds, and at higher altitudes to the south and towards Africa. Two main cones are formed, one at 2750 m and the other at 2800 m, forming a single structure. The shelter of the Philosopher's Tower is buried for ever under tons of volcanic material.

The castles are divided into two main arms: one goes down to the botanical garden Nuova Gussonea (Filiciusa Milia), on the southwest side and the other in the direction of the Sapienza shelter. Even this time this structure resists the fire, but the lava Nicolosi's service center and a bar are invested.
Conclusion The eruption ends on January 29, 2003; The emission of lava, ash and other volcanic products is estimated at around 160 million cubic meters.

This is an easy and uncompromising journey for those who are not used to walking long or for having children. The first part of the journey will take you through the immense eruptive fracture of 2002/2003; It is a jumble in the open ground following one of the most impressive eruptions of the last 100 years.

The climb to the craters is short and the children have no problem overcoming it. When you get to the top, the trail goes right on the edge of the volcanic mouths, from which the highest spectacular panoramic views of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Ionian Sea will leave in your eyes that amazement that nature can only arouse.
The whole trail is also suitable for children to make a day in contact with nature.
The actual walking time is 2 h 30 min. About, interrupted by several stops.
At the end of the excursion you can stop at Piano Provenzana to visit a beautiful photo gallery of Etna.
